Why Preparation Matters Before Painting

Start with the condition of the surface

A fresh colour can change a room, but the finish depends on what sits beneath it. Before choosing paint for a South London home, look at loose coatings, uneven repairs, staining and the condition of the plaster or timber. A quotation should explain which preparation is included so you can compare the scope of the work.

Protection and access come first

Discuss the rooms being decorated, furniture that needs moving and how the household will use the property during the work. Floors, fittings and neighbouring surfaces need appropriate protection. Clear access and an agreed sequence help keep disruption manageable, particularly in occupied homes.

Repairs, sanding and dust control

Paint will not repair a damaged surface. Filling, sanding and checking repairs in the room’s light help reveal areas needing further attention. At Pure Perfection London, we use Festool sanding equipment with dust extraction as part of our preparation. Dust control reduces the spread of sanding dust; it does not remove the need for protection and cleaning.

Recurring cracks, damp patches or mould need their cause assessed before decoration. Covering them with a new coat alone may leave the underlying problem unresolved. Any additional repairs should be discussed before the scope changes.

Choose a compatible coating system

The right first coat depends on the surface and the chosen finish. New plaster, stained areas, previously painted walls and bare timber can require different treatment. Follow the relevant manufacturer’s instructions for preparation, primer, drying and recoating rather than assuming one product suits every room.
