Clean edges start with a considered method

Masking tape and freehand cutting-in are both useful decorating techniques. The choice depends on the surface, the detail and the finish you want. For a homeowner, the useful question is how the decorator will protect the room and achieve a consistent edge.

Where masking can help

Masking helps define colour changes and protect adjacent fittings, tiles and woodwork. It is particularly useful when a design includes straight bands or several colours. It also forms part of the protection needed for spray work.

Tape needs to suit the surface beneath it. Delicate finishes, wallpaper and newly painted areas call for care. Applying tape over a weak coating can lift that coating when the tape is removed, so testing an inconspicuous area may be sensible. Application and removal should follow the tape and paint manufacturers’ instructions.

Where a brush gives useful control

Careful cutting-in allows a decorator to work around mouldings, corners and small details. Good brush control takes practice and the right paint consistency. Freehand work still requires surface preparation and protection of the surrounding area; it is not a reason to omit either from the quotation.

The edge is only part of the finish

Uneven joints, old paint build-up and damaged plaster can affect the appearance of a line. Discuss those conditions before work begins. Repairs, sanding and an agreed colour boundary are often as important as the tool used to apply the final coat.
